Summary

Acupuncturist collaborates with the Back & Pain Center Clinical team and provide consultative services based on referrals, which can treat symptoms of disease determined by a referring physician or are meant to optimize the health and well-being of the patient. Services include acupuncture, acupressure, electro-acupuncture, gua sa, cupping, and tui na (form of Chinese massage).

Responsibilities*

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Meet with patients to obtain information about their complaints, symptoms, medical history, diet, lifestyle, and psychological health

  • Assess patients to make diagnoses and determine treatment strategies and/or care plan

  • Educate patients on the quality-of-life benefits of consistent acupuncture care

  • Explain procedures to patients and prepare them for treatment

  • Administer acupuncture or electroacupuncture treatment using sterile, single use needles at specified locations to address patient?s chief complaint

  • Administer tui na, cupping, and guasha at specific locations to address patient?s chief complaint

  • Monitor progress and modify treatment plans when necessary

  • Maintain a safe, clean, and professional environment

  • Participation in the department?s Lean initiatives, Service Excellence programs, M-learning compliance, specific procedure competencies and knowledge/compliance of regulatory agency requirements

  • The ability to effectively communicate and listen

  • Maintain safe and clean treatment environment and adhering to Clean Needle Technique protocols; comply with institutional policies, procedures, and regulations

  • Document patient treatments by charting in MiChart

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • Registered or licensed as an acupuncturist within the state of Michigan.

  • Master?s Degree in Acupuncture or Oriental Medicine from an accredited institution

  • A minimum of 750 clinical/didactic hours training in the Traditional East Asian medicine from a school accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine (ACAOM)

  • Passed the NCCAOM examination in acupuncture and clean needle technique

  • Evidence of 60 NCCAOM accredited professional development activity (PDA) hours over a four (4) year period of continuing education in East Asian Medical or equivalent CME approved courses.

  • Minimum 3 years of clinical acupuncture experience

  • Excellent customer service skills

  • Ability to make patients feel safe and comfortable during acupuncture treatments

  • Exceptional time management with the ability to treat multiple patients per hour

  • Ability to learn and utilize computer programs, electronic medical records, and all relevant devices

  • Accountable for performance; open to feedback and training for professional development

NOTE :

  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the UMH credentialing and privileging processes.

  • In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee must be physically capable of carrying out all assigned duties:

  • Able to stand and/or sit for long periods of time

  • Emotional and physical health sufficient to meet the demands of the position

  • Strength sufficient to: lift some patients, move heavy equipment on wheels (up to approximately 500lbs), and to move and transport patients in wheelchairs and stretchers

  • Must be able to push, pull, or lift up to 50lbs

  • Ability to concentrate and focus attention, thoughts and efforts on patients and equipment for varying periods of time

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

  • General supervision is received from an active medical staff member at UMH

Work Schedule

Required Work Hours: This is an 4 hour/week; either morning or afternoon session M-F, part time position .

Work Locations

The position is located in the Back & Pain Center located at the Burlington Building (325 East Eisenhower Parkway; Suite 310, Ann Arbor MI 48108).

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
