Supplier Quality Engineer III

Job Description:

Key Responsibilities

  • Is the liaison between Purchasing, Engineering, Operations, and suppliers to resolve supplier quality issues and to provide technical support. Supports investigation of supplier quality problems and coordinates implementation of effective and timely resolutions.

  • Communicates supplier part quality issues and drives for solutions.

  • Facilitates investigation of supplier quality problems and coordinates implementation of effective and timely resolutions.

  • Independently manages containment activities to minimize supplied part quality impact to the plants.

  • Champions support for formal 8D problem solving containment, root cause, and corrective action documentation. Coordinates supplier scheduling of formal 8D report outs either at Allison or via teleconference. (Note: the 8D process is one of the automotive industry’s standards for a problem solving methodology)

  • Directs controlled shipping levels and documentation required.

  • Manages cost recovery documentation.

  • Completes special activities and assignments as requested.

  • Facilitates the implementation and monitoring of advanced quality planning with selected future product supplier.

  • Reviews and approves supplier quality plans on new parts programs.

  • Validates supplier design of product and processes utilizing the Automotive Industry Action Group's Production Part Approval Process (AIAG PPAP) process. Implements and monitors part conformance. Mentors less experienced peers in these topics.

  • Ensures required supplier quality documentation is organized and retained according to corporate guidelines. Reviews and audits supplier manufacturing processes and quality systems.

  • Independently manages ongoing relationships and resolves conflicts as needed.

  • Adheres to unit and corporate purchasing policies and procedures.

  • Provides support for various systems, including Supplier Quality Notification (SQN), SAP ERP, and online PPAP’s. Mentors less experienced peers in these topics.

  • Mentors other less experienced employees in supplier quality processes and standards.

  • Maintains a physical presence in the workplace.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.

  • Oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate orally and in written format in cross-functional environments.

  • Knowledge of statistical quality control techniques.

  • Knowledge of manufacturing and assembly plant processes.

  • Knowledge of gaging techniques and Measurement System Analysis (MSA).

  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively lead, motivate and facilitate others in group setting.

  • Experienced with Geometric design and tolerancing (GD&T)

  • Strong level of analytical ability where problems are complex. High level of analytical ability to assess and identify appropriate alternative courses of action for definition and resolution of problems that are somewhat unique and diverse.

  • Advanced problem solving skills

  • Collaboration in a variety of work settings.

  • Experienced with a variety of Purchasing / Global Supply Chain concepts, practices, and procedures.

  • Wide degree of creativity and latitude.

  • Proficient in AIAG standards – APQP, Control Plans, FMEA, PPAP, SPC, and MSA.

  • Proficient in the automotive industry 8D problem solving tool.

  • Ability to organize, plan, document tasks, and prioritize work.

  • Preferred Certifications:

  • Certified Quality Analyst (CQA)

  • ASQ certified Quality Engineer (CQE)

  • Certified Six Sigma Black Belt

  • Certified Six Sigma Green Belt

Experience

  • 5 or more years of experience in the field or in a related area.

Scope

  • Manages assignments and workload with autonomy; daily tasks are largely self-directed and associated priorities are aligned with enterprise goals. Performs a variety of complex tasks, with a considerable scope of work and with a substantial span of control expected of an individual at this career level.
