If you are a student looking for an opportunity to grow, Copeland has an exciting opportunity for you! Based in our Sidney, Ohio location, you will have the opportunity to work in the Materials Engineering Department as either a Chemistry or Polymer Engineering co-op. The Materials Engineering laboratory supports many different business functions and divisions globally which lends itself to diverse projects and samples. You will have the opportunity to gain knowledge and exposure to an extensive array of analytical and physical testing equipment and methods of testing for chemical and materials characterization. You will learn about some of the critical material properties required for our Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVACR) compressor materials of construction and why they are important.

As a Chemistry Co-op , you will perform a variety of benchtop analytical and wet chemistry tests to evaluate the condition and performance of oils, metalworking fluids, contaminants (“unknowns”) and other materials associated with our industry. You will assist with data collection, preparing data reports for customers, as well as assisting in preparation of samples for follow up testing.

As a Polymer Engineering Co-op , you will support activities thorough in-depth engineering analysis, preparation of user training materials and documents, preparation of detailed input for analysis, summarizing data, documenting, and presenting results. Conduct accelerated aging of plastics and elastomers to look at the effect of time and temperature on both physical and mechanical properties to determine if they are appropriate for lifetime use our product applications.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Performing basic laboratory experiments

  • Carefully handling trace contaminants for analysis of customer issues

  • Understanding beginning Engineering aspects of heat transfer technologies

  • Handling incoming sample logging and preparation for analysis

  • Preparing customer data reports.

  • Conducting accelerated aging of plastics and elastomers to look at the affect of time and temperature on both physical and mechanical properties.

  • Working with physical properties include mass, volume swell, dimensional change, and hardness.

  • Working with mechanical properties including stress at break, strain at break, modulus, and elongation.

  • Performing all the pre-measurements, assembling pressure vessel to perform the ageing, post measurement, data analysis, and making observations from the data generated.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:

  • Undergraduate student currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science and Engineering or related field

  • Sophomore or higher class status

  • Ability to work 40 hours/week

  • Ability to work safely in a lab environment with typical hazards of high temperature, pressures, and flammable, mildly toxic chemicals

  • Ability to lift 45 pounds on a regular basis, standing for extended periods of time, and use of hand and power tools

  • PC skills including Microsoft Office - Able to communicate in both verbal and written forms

  • Good communication skills and collaborative ability to work well in a team

  • Legal authorization to work in the United States - Sponsorship for this role will not be provided

PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:

  • Undergraduate student currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Polymer Science and Engineering

  • Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher

  • Prior Co-op Experience with Copeland or another company

  • Reliable transportation- Sidney has multiple locations and will need own transportation for commuting

The newly renovated Sidney campus has 1M square feet of manufacturing floor with an additional 120k square feet of leading-edge lab facilities. This location is the headquarters for the air conditioning and cold chain businesses.
